At the intersection of painting and robotics…

Science and Art are two things most uniquely human. They witness to the desire to see beyond the seen. They display the crowning success of the objective and the subjective views of the world....they stem from a shared source – the careful observation of things.

John Barrow:The Artful Universe

Since very young I have had a deep interest in both Art and Science. Although my school didn’t offer art as a subject, my parents allowed me to attend weekly art classes with a local artist, Mrs Shirley Shuttler. When I finished school, I couldn’t decide between Architecture or Computer Science; I chose Computer Science, eventually obtaining an MSc from the University of Cape Town in 1982.

I went on to start my own software company specialising in the field of healthcare. In 2004, I resigned as the CEO, took a sabbatical, and started studying Art. I resolved that, having spent the first thirty years of my adult life studying and working in Science with an interest in Art, I would spend the next thirty doing it the other way around. I took life drawing and painting classes with Jeannette Unite and Julia Teale, and I enrolled to study for a Bachelor's degree in Visual Art. In 2011 I was accepted into the MFA programme at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, graduating in 2013.

I now live and work in Cape Town, and divide my time between painting and assisting the research and development group of my software company.
